Upcoming Event: Celebrating the African Diaspora in Italy: An IG Live with Ariam Tekle & Emmanuelle Maréchal
By Black Women Radicals
Join us for an upcoming IG Live with Emmanuelle Maréchal and Ariam Tekle on celebrating the African Diaspora in Italy.
On Tuesday, October 3rd at 1:30 PM EST/ 7:30 PM GMT+2, join us for an IG Live with writers and creators Emmanuelle Maréchal and Ariam Tekle, as they discuss their organizing and leadership in celebrating, honoring, and uplifting the African Diaspora in Italy! Maréchal and Tekle will discuss their work as co-founders of Blackcoffee_pdc, a podcast that consists of interviews of guests belonging to the Black diaspora, who, through their work, contribute to expanding the narrative about Black identities.
The intent of Blackcoffee_pdc is to create a space for conversation and debate on complex topics about the Black diaspora that the media doesn't report on. Blackcoffee, born in April 2020, represents, so far, a body of work of 101 episodes spread around five seasons during which various Black Italian figures told their story and experience and shared their reflections. From analyzing the mainstream media's narration about Black people in Italy to activism, music, and art, the podcast also opened space for thoughts around lesser-known topics such as mental health within Black communities in Italy.
Maréchal and Tekle will also discuss the upcoming Blackn[è]ss Fest, which is a “three-day event of connection, discovery and reflection around antiracism through music, art, and panels with guests from all over Italy who come to amplify the conversation about the Black Italian experience.”
Emmanuelle Maréchal (she/her) is a French-Cameroonian fashion writer, sub-editor, and Blackcoffee_pdc co-founder. She arrived in Italy in 2009 thanks to the Erasmus program. There, she studied Italian language and culture and International Relations. Enriched by diverse experiences between France, Italy, Germany, and the UK, she is passionate about the Black diaspora's unknown stories in Europe. In 2018, she created the Instagram profile The LBDStories to tell their stories.Nowadays, she is focusing on writing about Black artists and creatives for the French glossy Naifs Magazine. Meanwhile, she writes about fashion in Africa and among Black diasporas for the online platform Ndaane. She recently started writing Le Journal Curioso on Substack, a platform where she combines her interests in fashion and Black diasporas in Europe.
Ariam Tekle (she/her) is a producer, podcaster, and emerging director. She fosters a particular interest in foreign policy and studies on the diaspora. In 2017, she directed 'Appuntamento ai Marinai', a documentary about Eritrean Second Generations in Milan. In the last couple of years, she focused on the production of Blackcoffee_pdc, a podcast she co-created with Emmanuelle Maréchal. The project is an archive of interviews and conversations with people from the African diaspora whose work broadens the narrative around Black communities in Italy. Ariam is also the founder of the Blackn[è]ss Fest, a three-day festival designed to explore, celebrate, and connect the African diaspora in Italy.
